Mongols were great conquerors because conquering was all they did. They were nomads so they had nothing to defend, no home to take care of, no domestic endeavors to worry about maintaining. They were free to spread out and go where they pleased, pillaging and raping everything in their path and leaving the cleanup to whoever came after.
