You are only allowed to own $2000 in assets as an individual or $3000 as a married couple. If you exceed that amount, the SSI is taken away. Although there are exceptions for some assets like a house or a car. That just sounds like a miserable way to live, never being able to have assets exceeding $2000, and only getting like $900 a month if you are lucky.
