Well, the hot air from the outside where the pressure is higher will seep through your window seals if they aren't tight enough and door cracks and such with much higher force, essentially reducing the cooling in general. If you have a split unit this doesn't matter because the heat dissipation is done entirely externally. What they're doing with the DIY dual hose method is emulating a split unit by making it cool itself with outside air, sucking that in so that it doesn't create negative pressure that would cause more hot air to come in from other places. It sounds counterintuitive but it works.
