I am 26 and in college for accounting. Classes are 70% girls and all of them already landed internships at the Big4, Next10 or at least in prestigious companies. All because they are cute. It's not their skills or academic success. It's not networking or their superior social skills. Girls get hired over guys because they are girls.My resume isn't the best, okay. But I study hard in college, keep up good grades, I know my stuff, I also go to the gym, do bouldering, eat well, dress fittingly. All I could land was an internship at a 10-man tax advisory. Here's the golden truth anon. There is no job, there is career, there is upward mobility. The cold hard truth is that a lot of us will not make it in the new world. It's rapidly changing and the ones now who are entering the job market have been groomed to be the next tax base to support our current social welfare amongst developed countries. It's a rigged game but those of us who are not part of it are actually the winners in the long run. We don't have to play at a life that we know is false and vapid. You can’t. It’s formal policy across the business landscape and across all institutions to prefer to hire and promote women. As an accountant, you have to target small firms where you’ll more quickly be expected to win clients. Boutique firms really need to generate revenue. So they need to expect new hires to be able to do that within a few years. The girls can’t do it, so they prefer to hire men. The larger firms don’t care because 90% of their employees are never expected to generate revenue. Even better would be if you could re-educate and pivot into investments or M&A advisory. It’s the same dynamic at investment funds but even more so because the guys are so about the bottom line the only way you go up is if you’re adding to the bottom line, which the women never do. It’s remarkably easy to get into M&A right now but everyone assumes they can’t do it. They’re hiring people from non-targets and corporate finance tracks.
