Meritocracy should be something used to incentivize citizens to work harder and when people achieve what they want through hard work they see the contract being upheld thus strenghtning democracy and the social contract.Meanwhile immigration is often used to keep raising the bar and making it impossible for someone to actually improve, because companies will hire people who aren't necessary better or smarter than you but will work for smaller salaries.
