They want to wait until after January, so that Vance gets 2 years as president but it doesn't count against his term limit. That would give Vance 2 years to make a name for himself and then go into 2028 elections as the republican frontrunner with the incumbent bump to boost odds in his favor, as well as some time before the election for the party overall to establish itself as "post-Trump" and as long as they score some easy wins between now and Nov 2028 they can brush a lot of the stink off of themselves, blaming Trump for all of their failures.if they wait too long to do it, though, Vance has to no time to try and present himself as a real president, and the smell of Trump's failures will be to fresh to ignore.
