Well in large part it's because it's just cheaper to start a reddit than run your own forum, and the reason it's cheaper is largely because running a website can expose you to liability, which a subreddit doesn't. The reason the internet didn't used to just be like five sites full of screenshots from the other four is that it was basically the wild west in terms of legal liability, and nobody really got sued for anything. Most people don't remember the whole Series of Tubes speech, but one of the memorable lines to me was "they're crying out for regulation".
