I got 60 gallon "cloth bags" on the balcony, I put 25 gallon tin cylinders on these bags (think waste baskets, just different more like a cattle trough), Then put 5-10 gallon ceramics on top of the cylinders. Let's you move the fragile stuff inside, The roots will go down from pot to cylinder to bag. Vertical is great (only 8ish hours of direct sun at my place). And the mass itself stops thermal shock. Go Big, Grow big. Took a 1/4" and a 1/8" screen to local creek, shifted out about 50% of the base material needed, use spagnum moss, shreddded wood chips, compost, a touch of agricultural lime to fill it out, expanded clay balls and some perlite to lighten the total mix. When I repot, I rescreen the material back to 1/4" to 1/8". That size of medium and mix basically means I can drench, like totally saturate them, every day. No crazy thinking involved, can go on vacation and anyone can water them....its impossible to over water. Easy to supplement with liquid ferts if needed, another benefit of a non-organic (rock, stone, baked clay) substrate. and the extra salts can be washed out no problem.
