Magic of the trick is twofold
They had to get something on the Moon to be there as proof of visit but at same time they knew chances that astronaut crew survives the mission are bellow 1%
So, unload cargo on the Moon and film the astronaut shit in studio.
They probably could send them there, but risk of failure was too high as it is even now.

The lunar rover on Apollo 15, 16 and 17 all had a remotely-operable TV camera
The astronauts were instructed to park the rover a certain distance away and the commands were relayed from Mission Control
Because of time lag, the motion was preplanned ahead of time and issued 2 seconds ahead of the countdown

On Apollo 15 the tilt mechanism malfunctioned
On Apollo 16 the rover was parked too close, so the planned controls did not keep the ascent stage centered
They got it (mostly) right on Apollo 17

Why wouldn’t they remotely operate it from the lander?
>weight concerns
Fuck off, they brought a whole as extra camera with a Tripod just to do a roll credits shot.
