Think of it like this. There is a supply and demand for human genes.There is a certain supply of low skill workers, and a certain demand for low skill work. You slash the demand with technology, the internet and all that. While you increase the supply with open immigration. Supply is higher, demand is lower, what happens to price? Goes down.I think that opening things up for the rich would create more economic activity, but unless that activity is channeled towards a good cause they will just take the sleaziest shortcut possible. Rather than making a factory, they'll ship in products from overseas. Rather than inventing something, they'll get into marketing and advertising to make you want something you didn't want 10 days ago. These business guys are cutthroat sleazebags, and while effective, they need to be directed by a responsible government towards serving the national good.
The economy is more of an ecosystem. Trickle down is like feeding only the whales, and letting all the other small fish starve to death. The wealthy used their influence to get the tax payer to pay them to move their plants overseas and to bring in cheap labor. The cheap labor was incompetent but that didn't matter.
