Nationalism has always been bullshit. It used to be a way for the wealthy to keep peasants in check - instead of "I own this and you work and die for me" it became "We own this and you work and die for the common good of our nation". In reality though an average man did not receive much benefits from belonging to the nation, but could cope with that, imagining he shares some of the elites' glory. Now the concept of nationalism has been abandoned by the elites not because they have betrayed the peasants, but simply because they had never had any allegiance to them. Today its more profitable to import new cheaper peasants from abroad, so nationalism scam goes into the rash and they pull out the multiculturalism and tolerance card to keep the mases from infighting within their domain. Nationalism was not abandoned per se, it never existed as a real ideology shared by those promoting it. Even in Nazi Germany an average Hans was freezing to death under Stalingrad for bullshit reasons, while party elites were having affairs with mistresses and partying. It was used just to get control over the masses and did not go any further. Nationalism can never work because it is fundamentally unnatural, - race and ethnic solidarity is not a thing and thus will not convince a rich influential elite to equate himself to a commoner.

They're my extended family, they're an extension of myself. NOT valuing them over all others is the dumb thing to do.Which is not to say that others are not bound to me in similar, if weaker ways. I am an allemanic german. A swiss german or "french" alsacian is my racial brother too, before even, for example a german saxon. An average frenchman is my brother before a spaniard. A spaniard before an arab. Just in the same way I come before my brother and my brother before my cousin. The relationship is real, the nation is just one layer of it.

The nation is both a genetic cluster and a political alliance, and the two don't always fit together perfectly.
