The-then Labour government defined citizenship as anyone within the British Empire. This then resulted in a massive inward surge of migration from the Colonies. In 1962, a Conservative government put "restrictions" on immigration. Two other laws in 1968 and 1971 intended to do the same, but the flow continued. By this stage, those who had settled and established roots began sponsoring their families to come over, which had no quota or statutory restrictions. Blair then blew the whole system open again post-1997, and there they are.
