Sure, Journey to the West is an interesting piece of literature. It was political satire towards much of Chinese culture. Incidentally, Journey to the West has a key piece of Chinese culture not described in the Dragon Ball universe, 易子而食. See, China has a long history of exchanging one’s children to others to be eaten. Sometimes it was just selling them like livestock during famines, but more moral Chinese would specifically trade their children for the children of others so that they didn’t eat their own kin, but the kin of others. I’m not sure why this wasn’t incorporated into the lore of Dragon Ball, but it was featured in the political satire work that spawned it. Perhaps it was a geopolitical favor to China that Japanese mangaka didn’t share this cultural heritage of the Chinese that has been repeated through many dynasties.
