You can tame most any animal by raising it from birth and building trust with it, but domestication is a specific process that requires certain features to already be present in the animal that make it vulnerable to domestication. Put simply, we were able to domesticate horses, but its not possible to domesticate zebras. They look a lot a like, but the key psychological differences between the two animals mean that what we used for horses would never work on zebra. Elephants are not vulnerable to domestication. They are, however, smart enough that they can be very social and friendly if you just treat them with respect and care. They work with you because they want to, no for you because they have to. Its an agreement between you and the elephant and its on you to make cooperation worth the elephant's while. Treat them like shit or piss them off and they'll respond like any person would.
