So let me get this straight. Luigi Mangione pleads guilty to Federal stalking charges but gets life? What is Agnifilo's point here with the Double Jeopardy thing? Will that somehow give Mangione less time? Also, why would Luigi plead guilty without a trial if the Defense knew the Prosecution had a lot of dirt on him?

My best guess is that the feds had enough evidence to give him the death penalty and they played chicken with whether Luigi would take it to trial and his foid wop lawyer convinced him to blink first. Dont forget the feds still execute people and Luigi would have been expidited to send a message.

New York has a special double jeopardy rule that's sort of contrary to the federal one.
So the theory is that because this guy pled guilty to a crime in another jurisdiction, and because that crime involves the same actions he took which led to him being charged with murder in New York, the state therefore must drop those charges.
I have no idea if that'll work. I doubt it'll have any impact on the weapons charges, which now seem like a slam dunk, but while important that's relatively trivial.
I expect he'll be sentenced to at least multiple decades in prison regardless, but if all goes well for him then he'll eventually go free.
