Luigi Mangione admitted to shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson as he pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking counts. Mangione, wearing tan prison clothes, addressed the court himself, saying: "After years of enduring severe pain from a broken back ... I learned UnitedHealth would be holding an investor conference in New York City." Mangione said he learned the exact location of UnitedHealthcare's conference by emailing the company, posing as an investor with more than $50 million in capital. Before CEO, he was in charge of its gov billing programs that negotiated pricing and coverage under medicare and retirement across multiple states. And it just so happens that UH was under federal investigation for double-billing medicare to the tune of 7.2 billion from 2009-2016, years when Thompson was running the UH gov billing program and reporting record profits. DoJ investigation began in May 2025 with a crucial hearing to challenge certain pieces of evidence starting Feb 2026, just 2 months after Thompson was killed. If he was still alive, he would surely have been subpoenad to testify, corroborating years of email correspondences, contacts with state and federal officials who may have had a part in enabling this fraud in exchange for kickbacks. Thompson would be the guy to make these deals and the possibility of him naming names would likely be motivation for some powerful people to have him silenced. But hey good thing UH won and DoJ dropped the case in March 2026 right?
