The Russian people which fell outside of the rule of the Russian Empire post Kievan-Rus collapse were known as "Ruthenians" (an exonym meaning "Russian"). Ukraine was invented by Poland and their Austro-Hungarian overlords who ruled a small part of Western Ukraine and wanted to keep it from rejoining Russia. The Ukrainian language is just Russian with Polish loanwaords because Poles made Ukrainians (Ruthenians) their serfs. The Ukrainian language is based on said pidgin dialect written in books by some shitty author named "Taras Schevchenko" in the late 1800s. All historical texts are in Old East Slavic (i.e. Old Russian) or Old Church Slavonic. Look it all up if you do not believe me.
