They're less likely to get a dog over a cat pet though, but even that's not a rule. However, since there's less dog presence in everyday life, more people tend to fear them (especially women) because they think a dog that barks at you is a dog that's about to bite you or something like that.

What you'll more often see in the southern side of the mediterranean are cities filled with cats and people in residential neighborhoods petting them and giving them food. Cats are naturally attracted to these area and tend to like them and the humans feel spiritually nourished by petting the neighborhood's cat. That's how it goes most of the time.

I also don't need the obligation of being home to let an animal out every 4 hours. Maybe if I was a duck or pheasant hunter I'd get a dog. Not worth it otherwise.
