>>540837094It's less to do with paying for more designs and more to do with a single builder buys the land and then builds on it and building at that scale would be a logistical nightmare to make every single house different. Neighborhoods that have distinct houses were built by many different builders and are typically custom homes. It just happens organically and it used to be the norm. This trend of buying land and subdividing into tiny rectangular lots is horrible and produces slop.
>>540838735I can actually testify to having two good HOAs. My first one was dedicated solely to maintaining the neighborhood pool and playground. That was it. They didn't hassle people for having a camper parked in the driveway or building a shed in the backyard. My current one is pretty good and run by people in their 30s. Most of the neighborhood is young families and the few cowardly boomers that have tried to start shit have been ridiculed into oblivion by everyone else. We had one putting anonymous notes in mailboxes for people having cars in their driveway and parked in front of the house. There was basically a manhunt to find them and I know they saw the backlash they caused because they stopped immediately. That being said, I didn't get a fucking warning because my trashcans were visible from the street. That pissed me off and was a reminder that this HOA could tip into retard territory without younger people keeping it in check.
