Optical Discs are good but only if they are stored properly. Really, disc technology should've gone the route of the UMDs used for the Sony PSP. They were mini-discs like the GameCube used but encased in a plastic housing, with only a small portion of the disc exposed at any given time. But for some reason those never took off. To explain what I mean, go to a thrift store sometime and buy a used CD from 30 years ago and then buy a used cassette tape from 30 years ago. The cassette will sound fine most of the time. But after nearly 30 years, basically every CD will have scratches and thus you'll have skips in the songs and it'll be bad

You get one scratch on a CD or on an older vinyl record and it's basically fucked forever, you have to be very careful handling both of those formats even though they are very different. But with Audio or Video tapes you can do whatever, you can literally toss one to your friend on the other side of the room without any worry about damaging the contents within. I'm sure you probably have to be a bit more careful with the newer forms of digital tape storage mentioned in this thread, but having a hard plastic housing, and knowing that if you drop it or shake it, that it won't be ruined, there's some value in that
