Part 1/2 of some badly structured observations I made in regards to how America sees EuropeAmerica views Europe in a very judiazed lens. Look at how Europe is portrayed in movies. Europeans are always sex crazed. They do nothing but drink cappuccino and have weird sex and do drugs.As well as this idea that if you go to Europe you start becoming communist or an existentialistEven though there is an element of truth to that, it's not totally true.Some of the early Hollywood movies about Europe were made by Jews that gave the Americans this fantastical and non nonsensical view of EuropeEurope is portrayed as this feminine damsel in distress that needs helping by a strong man (subconsciously, America) Part of the reason jews portrayed Europe this way is because this is how they wished Europe was like for them!I mean(this is mostly Anglo-American), they always portray European men as gay and their women sexually perverted In the movie, Roman Holiday, Audrey Hepburn all of a sudden starts dancing because she did drugs in some club in Rome (iirc) is not really how things happen in EuropeIt's an American movie, starring a British actress, but directed by a jew who emigrated from Europe. If you think about it, this is also similar to what Europe did with the Middle East, with European Orientalism. This sort of view of the middle east as a place of islam and harems and exoticism, etc...Then again, this idea is somewhat breaking down but not fully since Americans visit Paris but they dont actually live true Paris, because they are just going to a glorified disneyland (which Paris also has)In reality people live in Paris, it's not some sort of amusement park where people just sit outside cafes all day long while plotting protests all day long. It's an actual city that has its good and bad.
2/2One movie that I hate to praise because I am Greek, that strangely goes against this narrative (I think unintentionally) and is the new Christopher Nolan's OdysseyIt's basically devoid of anything that has to do with the actual story; The english is not spoken like some sort of clean british accent, instead, even the british actors speak a modern american tongueSo, this adaption of the Odyssey, while not faithful, this is actually just American self insertion to an ancient world which Americans never really hadAlso, about European Orientalism, think about it this way, most of Shakespeare's plays, are never in England Hamlet? DenmarkOthello? CyprusRomeo and Julliet? Italy Winter's Tale? BohemiaPericles? LebanonMacBeth? Scotland perhaps European orientalism was sort of made for Europe to strengthen this idea of being an Englishman or a Frenchman, because a lot of this homogenous view of Europe is probably a way for Americans to feel more connected to their roots, so that they dont feel so aimless, disconnected, and rootlessmaybe this is Nolan's true achievement, foreigners don't see the Greek connection to the Odyssey, so they don't feel the appeal of stealing Greek culture in a way that is not accurateAnyways I am rambling.
