The powers that be have wanted to bring tech workers down a notch for decades. And they hate the WFH/flex options that white collar workers won during Covid, both because they want to feel in control and because there's a lot of money tied up in mostly-empty office buildings. But there's a point where you need actual work to get done and don't want horrible accidents and productivity losses because every code update makes your software worse. Are they all going to be sent home? They don't seem smart enough to do investment type schemes ala the Chinese in Vancouver.
