What happens when technology and artificial intelligence reach a point where those in power no longer need people?

Historically, the wealthy needed ordinary people as laborers (in factories and on farms) and as soldiers (in wars). When technology eliminates these two needs, the social contract collapses.
What will happen to the general population when that happens? Democracy will certainly become meaningless and irrelevant at that point, and the people will be powerless to do anything about it. Money in itself can become useless at that point.
What will happen to us when/if things reach that point? I can't see this ending well.

>What happens when technology and artificial intelligence reach a point where those in power no longer need people?
Broadly three possibilities though combinations and modifications are possible:
1. UBI: ranging from barely enough to survive on, or enough to live well on. I actually think the latter is more likely because (a) productivity will be so high that most goods are practically worthless and (b) democracy probably still exists and the government will bribe people with UBI for votes. Even if it doesn't, provided they don't resort to (3) it will be necessary for stability to keep everyone fed. This is the stablest, lowest risk and lowest guilt option for the elite so I think it's the most likely.
2. Parallel societies: the elite increasingly lives in gated communities or even entire cities with everyone else locked out. This is unstable because almost all of the people who know how to build AI and robots will be on the outside, so the poorer parallel society will eventually create its own AI and robots to compete with the rich one, violence likely ensues. Current elites will predict this so I think this situation is unlikely.
3. Killbots: the elite decides to kill everyone whose personal wealth isn't enough to live without working. The problem is as with (2) most of the people who know how to make robots and operate war machines are on the poor side, so this leads to war and potential death of the elite. This is potentially just a faster version of (2).
>>
>>540928851
They cook up a war to kill all those people.
>>
>>540928851
First nothing happens. Then slowly all the 150 IQ motherfuckers don't have a job. Then they shut down the power sub stations and next thing you know everyone is having a really bad time. The greedy elites will continue to be greedy little faggots while the poors continue to do poor people shit while the schizo's schizo even harder and the world turns while it burns same shit different day. I expect that the riots will get so bad that the elites will simply purchase our compliance via direct bribes and at that point we'll be self aware monkey's in cages instead of pretending like money ever meant anything

It doesn't work that way. Those glorified chatbots don't work that way.
For every 50 or so jobs that can be eliminated by robotization, 1 job is created, because someone has to tard wrangle that artificial idiot. And that already underestimates how dumb robots are.
A significant fraction of corporate bureucracy already consists of bullshit jobs that nobody needs. Robots do not make this more efficient or sensible, but that does not stop managers from trying.
>>
>>540930605
It literally isn't. The largest African groups are Nigerian and Caribbean which are Christian, and Muslims are only 6.5%. The largest nonwhite ethnicity is Hindu. These aren't good things in and of themselves but they clearly make an "African caliphate" an impossibility in the foreseeable future.

When I get something that's better than the old thing I used I usually chuck it out, or donate it if it's still good. If I can't do that I leave it in the backyard for a time before I organize a trash collection.
Politically, the comparison would be we get discarded into barren reservations or at best, donated to poorer nations still relying on human labour. All this is in wait for a world war, when there's enough of us piled up in one location that it's worth the cost of organizing it.

>>
>>540934555
>nobody with any sense of self-preservation is going to fight some idealistic bullshit rebellion
So you didn't read/understand it. I describe two scenarios that lead to rebellion/war:
>(a) elites hide, leaving everyone else to fend for themselves
>(b) elites try to kill everyone
(B) is not an "idealistic bullshit rebellion", it IS self-preservation. (A) is also not an idealistic rebellion. If the elites leave everyone else alone, everyone else will OBVIOUSLY form their own society because that is how every society already formed (mass of people in one place without no government -> someone organises and takes power (likely several someones but eventually something akin to nation states emerges, probably far faster than it did in the past since we already have the concept)). That would almost certainly lead to war between the newly formed states and the enclaved elites that they surround and massively outnumber.

>they can just be obedient stooges in exchange for not being turned into meat cubes by the ruling elite.
That is covered by the UBI scenario. I explicitly stated the three scenarios could be mixed e.g. the elite gives UBI to some people and ignores others. If they leave any significant amount of people alive outside of their enclaves it still results in parallel societies and eventual war though.

>I'm here for 4 weeks on an offshore project
Uh-huh, "offshore project", that's what you old nonces call it eh? Although if you are some retarded oilrig worker it explains why you can't fucking read.

Which part of "universal" are you too fucking stupid to comprehend? The cashiers and the office drones are going to be their play meat. Engineers and the 0.000001% of the global population that would actually be of use maintaining their power base will be covered by this "universal" basic income. For someone with your flag you sure have a tenuous grasp of your native tongue.

>>
>>540935298
Well there is a reason they have that property, between their accumulation of it and the possibilities it endows them with there is good reason for the monkeys to tolerate the difference between monkeys.
Not everyone is lucky, not every monkey has the capacities needed to reach or perform at such a role.

Even monkeys know monkeys are not equal.

Power tends to be the degree to which you do not to need others, if others do not need power it still remains power so the genuinely powerful do not fear such a scenario.

The AI at that point would be superintelligent (or close), and won't be controllable by humans. To a superintelligence, providing abundance for all would be trivial - no need to destroy us.
>>
>>540935543
They really already do just that, it gets them great amounts of food.
Just because your mind does not want to bridge the gap between value and its symbolic representative (money) does not mean it will humor your wishful thinking.

It will simply all gradually get worse. AI is not the panacea techbros imagine, but general trends in productivity lead to similar outcomes.
So long as the decline is drawn out over several lifetimes, the masses won't get too rowdy. Plenty of effective distractions will remain readily available and inexpensive.

when thinking about the naked king, i think of a system which lead to nobody daring to tell the kind he is naked.
My modwrn interpretstionnis: The pimp is naked, but the hookers are not being paid to tell him.
You are right, the system is constructed in a way which makes the people dependant on the system, just as the system is dependant on the people (to bring op back in), the system has to ponder the needs of the crackheads, because the second the dealer stops providing, the crackhead, or general populus, will, in a natural opportunistic manner, jump ship.

Open source tech could be a big part of preventing that outcome, but it goes beyond just ai models. The real question is whether normal people can still own productive technology once companies need fewer employees.
We could shift from an employee economy to one where individuals become mini agencies or businesses. With AI, automation and robotics, one person could potentially do what used to require an entire team. If those tools are cheap and widely available, ordinary people could become more economically independent rather than useless.
I think open source helps stop a few companies fully controlling super intelligence, but physical hardware, energy, compute, robotics and access to markets matter just as much because if a handful of companies control all of that, then being a "business owner" could just mean renting everything from them.
So your scenario isn't exactly inevitable just yet. The real issue is whether ai and underlying infrastructure will be owned by more individuals therefore becoming decentralized, or concentrated to the few at the top.

Thing is it ain't just the king, all the others are naked too.
It's just the kids and the crazies that dare say it, and then there are types like you that think only they are not naked.

But yeah that is precisely why ultimately every system of rulership will always collapse back to reality; the arrogant king/supreme leader/czar/prime minister/chairman/president/whatever who ignores his people's actual needs will always be forced to either alter his course or suffer the consequences.

And AI, however powerful it becomes or unimpressive it remains, well, it does not fundamentally change anything about how power works.

That's why i like it, it's basically one of those laughing mirrors for society as a whole.
