Eventually Taiwan will rejoin China peacefully. There is not going to be a war over it. At least it is highly unlikely to happen. A conflict like that assuming the US will get involved even indirectly would mean a collapse of much of economic ties between China and the US, which would be next to impossible to sustain. Not to mention that with an increasingly jingoistic Japan it could involve them one way or another, which threatens to turn the war nuclear quite fast. Nobody would benefit from a catastrophe of such magnitude. Not to mention, Taiwan itself is slowly becoming less and less important to the US and, as China's navy expands, less defensible as well. Eventually Beijing and Washington will likely strike some kind of deal where China is given a green light to absorb Taiwan peacefully. Taiwanese may not like it at first, but should US and China reach such an agreement, Taiwan’s own authorities will gradually prepare their population for imminent integration and explain to them why this may actually be a good thing in a highly unstable global environment. They may have some protests there at first, but they will die out with time and careful handling just like those in Hong Kong did. Full integration will take a few decades, but eventually it will be done.

Military option is a clumsy, costly, unpredictable solution that is burdensome in the aftermath. China does have the resource to put down any kind of insurgency in Taiwan should there be any, but that would mean the island risks being a constant pulsing wound they would have to constantly dump resources into in order to keep it from spreading. Honk Kong, despite being much smaller, being taken peacefully and in accordance with international treaties (mostly) proved to be a pain in the butt, and Taiwan would be an even bigger one. China will do everything in its power to avoid a military option for this exact reason, not withstanding the international backlash and possible US/Japan involvement in the conflict.

The US has a bipartisan position within the Congress on China being the strategic rival, but both parties have different ideas of how to confront Beijing. To the Democrats it is more along the old-fashioned ways of power projection into the Pacific region and maintaining close (yet costly) alliances that would help curtail China as much as possible. They would never give Taiwan away but instead would maintain the position that it could be given up at some point, but not now, so that to prevent Beijing from employing the military option. Republicans are more of a wildcard, especially with Trump in charge. It looks like he believes that the time of US being the world police is over and he should squeeze as much as possible from America's former allies and then live them to their own devices (nowhere near fully, of course). Outside of the Iran affair, which was a really baffling decision, he and part of his team still think America should be mostly entrenching in the Western Hemisphere. I can see him striking a deal with Beijing at some point in case he believes an action from Chhina is imminent and he would have to sink too much resources into Taiwan to keep it afloat. However, I cannot foresee the future and with Trump in charge it is utterly impossible to predict, so I might as well be mistaking.
