Russia were baited into invading the east of Ukraine in order to protect ethnically Russian Ukrainian citizens, they have been quite restrained and it's only Ukraine's eagerness to fight back (because that was the plan all along) that has resulted in a prolonged conflict.

WWI and WWII were extremely destructive wars. While some elites did get rich from these wars, the workforce shrank in number, nations were not able to produce as much as they would have been able to otherwise.If nukes/WMDs didn't exist, there'd be no reason to avoid WWIII. During the Cold war, if nukes didn't exist, it would've been logical for the west to launch total war against USSR and communism. However, elites wanted to be able to have competing government systems to find out which one was better for producing goods and developing technologies which those elites could use to further control populations in the future. Both sides made great strides in different areas, but since then it's been clear that capitalism is simply better for mass production. If nukes didn't exist, then there would've been no reason not to have WWII in the 1960s, 1970s or 1980s. Instead we got little skirmish wars like Vietnam and Iraq to use as testing grounds. Just look at the Russia Ukraine situation. It's so objectively horrific with modern drones. One almost wishes nukes could be used just to end it once and for all because it's such a shitty war

You say there’d be no reason to avoid WW3 without nukes, but that’s still true in this alternative scenario where nukes don’t exist, except now the elites know they can do WW3 if they want, they just choose not to. Hell, even Ukraine today, without nukes there would be nothing stopping NATO from going in and doing to Russia the same thing it did to Serbia. The nukes are what keep NATO out, if they’re a fiction and everyone knows it then NATO should be in Moscow right now.
