The republican party started in the 1850s before the civil war and they were for big government and big spending and big banks. They were an extension of Whigs and federalists. They are opposed to small government and anti-federalists. They were opposed to slavery. They championed the 14th amendment. They are progressives and authoritarian. And they have been the same since Abraham Lincoln. Democrats as well because they changed to become like Republicans.

The only time the GOP implemented fiscal responsibility (i.e. balanced budgets) was when they were the party of high tariffs and when they embraced the principles of the New Deal under Eisenhower. They also never truly stood for limited government, not when they embraced high tariffs and infrastructure spending pre-Eisenhower, not when they upheld the New Deal framework pre-Reagan and not when they embraced militarism, promoting evangelical morality onto the nation and mass surveillance starting with Reagan.
