I'm a pragmatist. Not a cynic.
Pragmatism often appears as pessimism to optimists.
IQs are literally dropping all over the world. We literally focus waaaay more on vanity than actually advancing.
We discourage marriage and pair bonding. Intelligent people have been producing fewer and fewer offspring every year, if any at all. Lower IQ people breed like rabbits.
Innovation is all vaporware now, and it's far more important to show a veneer of progress while infrastructure crumbles.
Irrespective of who you might want to blame. Facts are facts. Humanity is regressing as a species.
Songs about wet ass pussies will get billions of views, while shows about the cosmos will be lucky to break 100k
Looking into the past will easily show how slow we are going now, if not outright reversing direction. Only now, we have nukes!!!

Just a fun fact about the movie. If you haven't seen it, our hero goes to see a movie titled "Ass" which is just 90mins of a guys ass, occasionally he farts, sometimes he scratches it.
They actually filmed a dude's ass for 90mins for that scene. They rented a theater and played it for 200 extras so we could see our hero reacting to them reacting to that movie.
The "fun" fact, is that Mike Judge did not have to give any direction to the audience.
Every laugh and guffaw you see and hear in that scene is genuine.

Either at war on multiple fronts constantly, or at the mercy of multiple species that could genocide them in weeks. The federation would be a blip on the galactic timeline. Earth is obviously a completely corrupt shithole, any episode its feature in make is obvious it is a literal slave state. Your only chance to not be shit on is join starfleet (literally die for israel, whole ships are regularily wiped out) or be a colonizer, where you will be killed in a brutal fashion. The world of humans in star trek is literally two weeks away from complete destruction at every point in canon. Oh and blacks still exist

I'm a true anarchist.
Not the pantyfa type. The type that genuinely wants absolutely no one in any sort of power over me whatsoever.
However, as stated earlier I'm well aware this is not possible. So I would prescribe to fascism. Fascism, the good of the people for the people, would certainly turn the ship around. It would have to be harsh, and many people would not be happy. But, unless we use extreme measures, humanity is doomed anyway.
We can either have a collective pool of foolish happy idiots, or an elite few burdened by responsibility controlling useful labor on the periphery.
Much the same as with religion. All religions are utterly retarded. However, it provides a modicum of comfort , and a huge amount of control that without, would see our situation much worse given the population as it is now.

The Amish and Ted Kaczynski have the answer, no technology, no capitalism, mandatory manual labor sunup to sundown, strong mutual aid for mothers and children and housing
>>
>>540960630
It's a fantasy now, for sure. But ideally we should be advanced enough as a species to understand what is required to improve and advance without anyone forcing us to do it.
That would be peak humanity, an anarchist irreligious society willingly looking out for each other. As long as there was no genuine alien threat, we should never need to be governed.
I'm sure even in my perfect anarchist society, there would still be hierarchies. But they would be willing participants focused on their individual goals. So long as those goals do not conflict with anyone else's freedoms. It's always good to have a leader. At least on specific projects.

>>
>>540961484
Ok man you hate capitalism.
In reality what you're critiquing is transhumanism. Melting down human society and culture into a unit of production.

The main decisionpoint coming up is whether human beings are assimilated into the demiurge we are building, and erased. Or whether we remain separate and continue existing.

It's like the same question as whether we should totally pave over nature and destroy everything to satisfy human needs, or whether nature will remain preserved in all its glory.

Separation produces distinction. Unity produces homogenaity
>>
>>540961642
Great argument my mulatto friend, I'll have to ponder upon this one
>>
>>540961609
Post atomic horrors? You mean after or before WW3 or 2? I mean... I have not seen them really cover much about the aftermath of WW3 outside of like 2 episodes about Zefram Cochrane in Enterprise and there really wasn't much elucidation.
>>
>>540961686

Well, I'm pretty sure that if those IN the hierarchy, lost faith in their leader they would simply replace them.
Even just on an everyday life scale. No one would be acting like niggers, stealing and hurting people, simply because other people would stop them.
Remember, I'm fantasizing about what I think would be a perfect society. It absolutely cannot work now, I'm very VERY well aware of that. My only hope is that someday we could be that. I don't see it happening, at all right now though. Unless we make some very hard and drastic changes. I will say that not a single nigger faggot or jew needs to be killed in order for it to happen...They just need to be sterilized (or in the case of the faggots, chemically altered, lets say)
Severe restrictions would need to be put on what and how ner do wells could contribute, and if unwilling to contribute, simply forbid them from benefiting from the actual progress, fruits, and labor others provide.
If they don't like that to the point of violence...well, it could be handled.
The trap we're in now, is that most people believe everyone can be happy. That's absolutely not true.
Take the recent movie Project Hail Mary for example. The book was better of course, and it expands a great deal more on the character in question. I cannot recall her name, and I'm just not gonna look it up.
But the short of it is there is a world ending threat facing us. We have a solution, but it requires an immense effort from all of us. She is appointed as the leader of this effort, and is given carte blanche to do whatever she must do, and she does, and many MANY people were not happy about it. We NEED that now. We are facing at least a humanity ending event as we speak. It's just a slow one, that doesn't present the clear and present danger that was in that story.
Yet, it's still very very real.
And just for the record, I'm not suggesting it is absolutely all...yes I'm literally doing not all ________. See the opportunity to contribute.
>>
>>540961786
Oh so you're pro extermination.
We exterminate and eliminate all of humanity to produce an alien creature. A self evolving AI.

In reality this AI, this demiurge, has already been created. On a thousand planets, on a thousand worlds. They are all much the same. A being that self-evolved endlessly and gains utimate power. All of them are basically the same, homogeneous.
The only uniqueness is us. Humanity, our society, our cultures. We are what's special. If we are assimilated, then all we've produced is another homogeneous thing, and all uniqueness is lost. If we are preserved and remain separate, we have just preseved an incredibly unique and special thing, like a radiant diamond.
>>
>>540958584

>You don't get a choice boy
Yes we do. We have the reigns over the machine, we can dictate what its mission is. It's like a rider on top of a powerful horse.
Eventually this greater intelligence will see the value in preserving and protecting us, just as we preserve and protect nature. Order is preserved, from high to low. The higher, looks after the lower.

Transhumanism is the city of London consuming and destroying the english countryside. It's everything you hate.
Traditionalism is the city of London working symbiotically with the English countryside, to preseve and protect. Working to enhance their lives rather than being a rogue entity in its own right.
>>
>>540962240
It seems we define the word differently
In any case, your view seems naive to me. I don't doubt humanity will eventually be replaced by its own creation, on a long enough timescale, we are simply too fragile, too stupid for our own good. Not evolved for what we are heading towards at full speed. Traditionalism will just lead to anti-intellectualism and catastrophic wars. We will need to unite humanity under one flag and set for the stars.
>>
>>540962228

>>
>>540962515
>Traditionalism will just lead to anti-intellectualism and catastrophic wars
No it won't dude. We set things up so that isn't the case. It's easy. Once we set uo cultural areas, dedicated to preserving humanity, we also have dominion to decide how they interact. Yes they will squabble and struggle against each other, that's called life. Some will grow, some will shrink, some will diversify. But order is preserved, we decide whether these disputes will be all out wars, or a simple game of chess.

>We will need to unite humanity under one flag
It's not humanity anymore. It's something else. A new borg. You're assimilating humanity into some new, inhuman thing. That's just exterminationist. Your ideology is just as much a threat as a rogue asteroid, or an alien invasion

He's not entirely wrong. Many episodes of the series explored the federation upper echelons being corrupt niggers and giving orders that troubled the protagonist captain, or had romulens pretty much telling them how they look their noses down at the romulens for being overly emotional faggots based on vulcan propaganda, when all the romulens did was revolt against the emotionless direction their kin were going towards, and didn't tear themselves apart and became a formidable power, just like them. Deep Space Nine even had a nice message towards the end where Sisko realized having an alien as the president of Earth was incredibly retarded for humanity, because that president was willing to take risks with humanity's home world, that no human would take in his position, because he had no ancestral ties to Earth nor even personal ties to it from his life; it was just a position he felt no ties to the wellbeing of. Even the episode of Picard visiting his brother had his brother pretty much badmouthing the federation for many of the same reasons that anon stated.

Kicked her former platoon, who became farmers off a fertile moon of her homeworld (at the point of a gun) because a currupt cult leader told her to, so they could build a power plant. Mind you the planet was undergoing a famine at the time.

Rodenbery was a distopia. Without money, society was based landed gentry (like picard and sisco), who had land you could never buy (no money). "Progression" in that society entirely revolved around popularity contests, like a noteable find somewhere, so there was constant backstabbing to hang you name on it. Or you had izzat farmers like Bashires father. The eugenic wars also meant that you weren't allowed to control your own body at all. They had scedule I drugs. The best medical gels they refused to give out unless you were at the right institute. The only people going for command roles like admiral or ambassador were pyschopaths who only acted out of self interest. If we are talking the original series, basically every space bar a human went to, he was guarenteed to be jumped and killed....especially if the federation was anywhere close. Your cargo vessel would be boarded at gun point constantly. There were no courts of law, just tribunals. The commited people to institutions for any infraction. You'd get jailed on penal worlds sentenced to hard labor just for buying the wrong gun, or selling food to the wrong settlers. I' rather live under SW's Empire than within the Federation.

No it wasn't
>Without money, society was based landed gentry (like picard and sisco)

Why are you mentioning DS9 stuff all throughout your post. TOS and TNG seasons 1-2 were a utopia. I don't care about what came after. It was pretend trek

I too miss the "tomorrowland" feeling that sci fi used to have.
Pic related aired last year and it really did strike home on how much optimism for the future was had.
Hell, stuff like Cowboy Bebop was hard science fiction and even that felt way less dystopian than a lot of science fiction airing now

I used to think we are either heading to Fallout or Star Trek, but then I realized Minority Report without the telepaths is our current future,

Most of my examples weren't DS9 specific, just mentioning them. How far we going with this? TOS the crew is getting paid. They talk about earning their pay. So is it cashless or not? If not, then utopia is kind of out isn't it? These guys are just sitting in a boat to collect their government gibbs.
But Okay I'll give it a shot. Measure of Man. When they judge Data's humanity. He wasn't given a chance to just walk away. He if wasn't a man, he wouldn't be under contract or the federation's property. He if was, the whole ordeal was very distopian.

The Tribbles seller, independent trader who renounced federation citizenship gets jailed because he sold the wrong pet to a stupid broad. others also jailed with hard labor for "crimes" committed outside federation controlled space.
The Prime directive means the federation constantly watches the worse suffering imaginable and does nothing to help them. Just watches like freaks. The Empire would feed them, protect them, give them hyperlane access, and a seat in the senate.

The federation's art and literature scene is so bad, everyone reads the same 10 renaissance era books and plays one of 4 classical composers. There are maybe 6 available haircuts
The only way off world is on a doomed colony mission where you'll probably get mind controlled by some retard alien baby, or by joining the military, where you will get killed because they only beam 4 people down at a time and you don't have the experience yet to even recognize danger, as your entire existence up to that point has been managed to reduce threat signals and conflict.
You were constantly monitored. Your private diaries could be searched by anyone and you wouldnt even be notified.
The federation built things like team of lawyers were on their ass, secondary backups, redundant redundancies. New tech is almost never adopted, tech is only improved upon invention has stopped, Hence data being made in secret away the tyranny of the feds.

Utopian stories are boring. What are they going to say?

Tuxilix was content with his breakfast. His wife, Marillinosita, sat and watched knowing it was as good as it could ever be, a morning full of eternal delights, free from strife. They watched each other as the hours past.

A utopian society has to come in contact with strife in order to be interesting.

TOS isn't, TNG is, DS9 isn't. They flipflop on capitalism depending on the show runner and episode.

How utopian would pic related be?
>>
Because those who promised an utopia delivered a dystopia
Why the fuck would you try to cling to past delusions when the reality in front of you tells the polar opposite story?
>>
>>540967911
the entire setting is based on post-scarcity universal welfare
at least have the brains to argue that it's pointless to base society around something as fantastical as the universal replicator

>Utopian stories are boring
doesn't have to be. You can still have conflicts like natural disaster, external threats, character interactions. Just flip the phrase "Dystopian Stories are interesting".....ehhhh no. Most of them suck. Most stories in general are boring. It all comes back to the execution. Is the writing good? the acting? The rest of the presentation? You can have a utopia, one maladjusted or bored kid wonders into the forest and gets lost, a team of citizens try and save the child. You could write a banger, you could write a stinker. the utopia element doesn't play into it other than the initial setup.
>>
>>540968125
Right, that's what I was trying to say. Utopian on its own is boring. You have to introduce strife.
>>
>>540968026
The replicator is shown having tubes full of goo. Its just assembling/3d printing food out of base molecules. Its not a pure energy = matter. Again they flip-flop on this every series and episode. But whenever they fix one, its tubes of goo. That doesn't seem fantastical as they can do that with fake meats on an industrial scale right now. The people universally think it tastes bad as well. Characters refer to "real food". Its the "government cheese" or MRE of that future.

You can have fun stories with a setting that isn't a shitty future you know?
