In Muslim law a man can divorce his wife by just saying it once. If he divorces her three times in a row then she has to marry and have sex with another man before she can marry him again and this is to discourage bipolar husbands from marrying and divorcing the same woman (especially if she financially depends on him because in Islam the wife doesn’t get half his property) every time he gets in an argument with herThe idea of saying it three times is a way for a man saying he has zero interest in remarriage and is serious about divorce. Whether or not that qualifies as three divorced or one (since divorcing a woman you already divorced is impossible according some jurists unless you remarry) is debated. Why would he want to do that? Because divorce normally stays pending for a month before taking effect in order to give chance for reconciliation, and if for example there is sex or whatever it nullifies the divorce, and he cannot kick her out during that time. Saying it three times is a practice to get around that waiting period which is why the validity is debated
