I also worked on several are UFMPs around the US.There's nothing inherently wrong with this. Cities need more urban canopy for a bunch of different reasons. The only funny thing is, this initiative has been in development for almost a decade before Mamdani ever became mayor. He's just making an announcement, but this project has very little to do with him.

Those sidewalk trees in NYC don't seem to do to well, they are basically container trees fertilized by garbage runoff, dog shit and bum piss. In suburbia we got boxed tree dealers like moon valley who will charge $5k for a five year old oak that will have a max 3-5 year lifespan, because a "mature" shade tree can increase the value of the property by 10k or more. So a developer that clearcut the property can build on it can get it appraised with "mature trees" even though they'll be dead by the time a young sapling will reach the same size (which will outlive the boxed tree). Also i wonder the future unintended consequences with pruning and maintenance costs, liability from fallen trees and branches injuring people or property, and the invevitable trade off between having a mess of fruits and nuts with female trees and the problems that come with it, or allergies when it's all male trees. Which is a major problem in alot of cities. Nevermind that most of those trees are gonna be clones, doing nothing for genetic diversity. Damn tree eugenics. as nice as it sounds i just dont see it being a viable solution at the scale its imagined at without ripping out half the concrete in the city.
