USA was getting mangled in the depression and this populist called FDR ran as a Democrat on a big new radical agenda with the New Deal which appealing both to the sourthern democrats but also black people. This new coalition crushes the old Republicans who pretty much had no appeal. It took them 40 years to finally win the house back and part of that was the "Southern Strategy" where they focused on race and managed to break away those old slave state whites from not identifying with democrats anymore. The civil rights era was like the final nail in the coffin. After that we got the more modern representation of the parties but they've gotten increasingly polarized.

Slaves were an economic threat to the north because they had a vast number more of them, it enabled the collective south to become strong enough to negotiate with foreign nations in their own right. You skipped a great deal of turmoil between the end of the civil war and FDR's presidency, namely the Reconstruction era but also the point at which classical libertarian democrats here began weaponizing the lobbies alongside republicans. The entire reason Lincoln even won the presidency was because he weaponized the economic interests of northern businesses that were disgruntled with the south's growing economic power, they all threw their collective wealth behind Lincoln and also backed his federalists to take power. Classic libertarians dropped their principles after the saw they would just keep losing to the collective wealth of the lobby, America has spent the time since then growing the lobbying industry to the point our elections don't even represent our people.
