My childhood friend became a huge WoW addict (I introduced it to him in 2005) he dropped out of high school to play WoW all day, attended blizzcons, read all the WoW lore books, etc. Some time around 2009 or 2010 he became some hardcore social justice warrior. Maybe raid a little in smaller 20- or 10-man raids (ZG, UBRS, AQ 20), raid in older content in the bigger 40-mans when the new stuff was out. Each extreme and middle ground had goals to strive for. It was absolutely perfect, and I say this as someone who started in 2007 (TBC) and only realized WoW pre-expansion era as my favorite game of all time when I replayed the flawed Classic version in 2019. Before that, WoW: The Lich King might've scraped my top 5 or 10 as an "experience". Classic WoW as a game is near-perfect on its own.
