What these LARP guys don't understand is that being an infantryman isn't about running around doing 3-gun shit. It doesn't meaningfully increase your chances of survival because your survival ultimately isn't up to you. A drone or an IED don't care how fast you can ruck or how quickly you can get a round on target. Most of the time, if you're gonna die, it's gonna be something you realistically couldn't have avoided at all no matter what you did. I don't want to die, personally. I spent a decade and change not caring but eventually realized that war sucks. Violence sucks. Injury sucks. It's more important that you are mentally and physically accustomed to suffering because withstanding suffering is the primary skill exercised in war. Civilians dramatically over-index on the "cool guy" parts of soldiering. Shooting guns is easy, anyway. You can teach a teenager to hit 300m targets reliably in an afternoon.
