For one you have governments and elites which through all the experiments in the 80s and 90s found that keeping people in permanent fear is a good recipe for control as to remove people from the power process altogether, compliant and relying on the state apparatus. On the other hand you have tech companies that through a series of algorithm and now a decade of market experimentation found that fear and ragebaiting are the most efficient narratives to maximize engagement. Both of these work in tandem for their mutual benefit, it will only get worse as mass psychosis programming is a vicious cycle, the collective neurosis of the next decade will be nothing compared to what you see today.
