If the dollar retained its purchasing power in the year 2000 the national debt would have gone from $5.66T in 2000 to $8.9T if you're using the realistic Shadowstats method for calculating real inflation. It wasn't some ethnic thing, it was purely just shuffling some land from one administrative subdivision to another. There are a lot of explanations people give as to why it was done, but in my opinion it was probably just to make it so that the railroads that went to Crimea from Ukraine didn't have to go out of one region, into Ukraine, and then back into that same region. Outside of Soviet bureaucracy Crimea has literally never been part of what people generally recognized as "Ukraine" until the 1990s. Russia retaking Crimea is more like the East Bank being reabsorbed into Jordan or something, but even less dubious than that.
