If they get to 2028 and let this get worked out in the primaries then its going to be a bloodbath and Trump will be fresh enough in everyone's minds that they'll be totally fucked. Whether or not it will work, its their best remaining move that doesn't involve a time machine or just straight-up cancelling the elections.
