Conspiracy theories sure are fun. But, I think it's much more reasonable to believe this guy got caught telling absolutely grandiose lies and when the walls started to crumble he killed himself. It's not unique, the penultimate version of this was at Jonestown when the reality started settling in for Jim Jones and his cultists were trying to go back to the United States he made the choice to kill himself and all his followers. It was a mass suicide that had been rehearsed as a plan-B if the cult shit didn't work out.
