Their whole invasion was predicated on Ukrainian government folding, which was an absolutely rational choice as prolonged conflict would inevitably be ruin for Ukraine. They simply weren't prepared to fight mobilized Ukrainian Army armed and bankrolled from abroad. Problem was twofold: 1) Ukrainian (Jewish) government doesn't give a fuck about Ukrainians, and reactionary Soviet-era boomers that are mostly in charge of Russia can't comprehend that. 2) Modern Westerner is so brainwashed and pacified that he's completely blind to all the hypocrisy, abuses and crimes going on in Ukraine. Russian leadership lives in previous century. They simply can't grasp the malicious, dehumanized threat they're facing. What saved them was the fact that their opponents are simply incompetent. Real societal and cultural benefit for Russia from this conflict will come as these elites from late-Soviet/early post-Soviet period get slowly replaced by veterans who bled for the country.
