This may be a controversial take, but people who kill because of some kind of Psychosis should be executed. If one is of clear mind and has rational motivation (killing rapist, cheater, thief, etc) their actions can be justified. An insane person is unpredictable. Treat them the way you would treat a dog that bit someone. Was there clear motivation for the dog to bite (stranger grabbing their owner, or being aggressive towards the dog) or is it rabid? You never let the rabid dog live.
