Been on the force for 12 years now, mostly patrol, and I'll give it to you straight: when I'm running traffic and I see that thin blue line sticker or some other "I support the 5-0" decal on your ride, yeah, you're getting different treatment. Not necessarily a pass, but professional courtesy. Here's why: that sticker tells me you're not some cop-hating asshole who's gonna make my shift harder, you're probably the type who'll comply, be respectful, and not give me static, which means you're statistically less likely to be a threat-what we call "situational awareness." You people with those stickers aren't the ones filing complaints later or recording me with your phone hoping I screw up so you can post it on social media, which means less paperwork for me, less IA investigations, and fewer headaches. I've got discretion on whether to write you for 5 over or 15 over, whether to give you a warning for that busted taillight, and if you display that sticker and show some respect, I'm more likely to exercise that discretion in your favor. At the end of the day, we're human, we respond positively to people who support us, so if you want better treatment from us, throw that sticker on your car, show some respect during the stop, don't argue, comply- we're just guys trying to make it home to our families at the end of shift, so make our job easier and we'll make your day easier.
