There's nothing inherently wrong with this type of system if it keeps the common good. On top of that, whoever works should receive a wage for what they work, this is basic fairness/justice. Those with good deeds ought to be rewarded richly, proportionate with their works, while those with bad deeds ought to be rewarded with punishment, also proportionate. Now, more rationally minded people, like philosophers, who do understand the value of morality and virtue, do actually seek to live for the good by itself and for itself.
