BRICS has proven to be an insufficient organization for pursuing any kind of shared political agenda for the Global South, the latter itself hardly ever talked about anymore because the hopes and expectations around it have not been lived up to. The term fell out of fashion largely because its entire point was that it was meant to represent a unified credible opposition to the Western-led world order. However, the events of the last months, mainly around Venezuela and Iran have shown just the opposite - although the West no longer leads the world unilaterally, no real multipolarity has developed as of yet, - there is next to no unified opposition to the US actions and although not always successful, they continue doing what they want unopposed. Amid these developments it is next to impossible to continue talking about Global South or BRICS as some sort of credible counterweight to the West. Just gets to show that merely being anti-West or against Western hegemony does not equal overriding all other differences and creating meaningful long-lasting ties between the dissatisfied countries. If you wish to create a credible opposition you cannot just put all the discontented states into a single group and expect it to somehow work. Ad hoc alliances without a sound ideological foundation or an institutional framework cannot last.

Thus, it can develop very easily horizontally, but there is little to no point in it because receiving new members does not have any tangible implications. On the contrary, the more new members it gets, the harder it would be to develop any kind of common political direction, because more members always equals smaller room for consensus. BRICS is, therefore, a house built on sand - it can paradoxically continue existing only in case it does not attempt to build an actual organization of itself, which practically means its existence is pointless.
