TRUMP: “We'll buy Argentinian beef.”

Reporters:' What about the US farmers who are suffering?'

Trump: “Argentina is fighting for its life. Do you understand me? They’re dying.”

He says this as 77 American cattle producers are going out of business in the US per day.

Because keeping farmers in businesses is what ensures you have sufficient domestic food supply without having to rely on imports that can stop at any moment.
Same reason your (((country))) has such high import duties.

It would be interesting to see who is buying up all this farmland off the banks after they foreclose.

If they can't pay their employees a living wage at $10 a pound for hamburger they probably shouldn't be in business in the first place.

Land, labor, and regulatory compliance costs are significantly lower for Argentinian ranchers than for U.S. producers. So it's not apples to apples.

Plus US cattle ranchers were hit with a drought recently.
>>
>>541297973
They can’t penetrate always restrict imports later once the American herds recover.
>>
>>541297973
This sounds like a tough situation. Beef prices are at record highs and just keep going higher. Yet, you say that heaps of beef producers are going out of business.

So what is going on here? The cost of production is exceeding the price paid to those producers. So is it the less efficient (usually small herders) producers simply being unable to compete in the high cost environment of the USA?
It may be that higher beef prices are not going to help those farmers anyway. Higher prices haven't helped them so far.
>>
>>541298085
Yes its got a slightly different flavor than our beef but we relied on it heavily while our nations herd was recovering early 10s BSE/madcow scare
good chances are if you had a steak at a casual fine dining chain from 2010-2017 you would of had some argie beef
We didn't allow whole primals or subprimals unless they were boneless so it was generally iqf frozen portions that only made it to resurants not into the grocery suppy chain
>>
That good to see rich ranchers go broke.
They got to cocky

For years ranchers have been paying illegal immigrants nothing and making a big profit, now the beef bubble is about to pop.
No country buys American, beef.
Only China, but Americans burned their bridges with China.

I don't understand Americans disdain for foreign beef anyway. Don't they realise that their beef is pretty much just derived from factory intensive onions fed feedlot beasts?

Why are cattle farmers going out of business? Businesses don't fail overnight; it is usually a result from a series of mistakes made over months, sometimes years. So again, why are they going out of business?
>>
>>541307599
I don't really know anything about cattle, but has the cost of feed dramatically increased over the last few years or something? It's not like demand has decreased. I heard something about some screwworms or whatever but I don't know how long that's been going on and how much of a problem it really is.

Maybe we should go back in time and ask why the herd started contracting in the 1980s. The herd size is actually tracking to go down to the 1930s level.

>>541307751
I think these are good questions to ask about the cost of feed and herd-size declining over the years. In any event, neither would be fixed overnight, so I don't see the problem with temporarily importing beef. Farmers don't complain when they get a nice influx of taxpayer bailout money, but they complain when a foreign supply has the ability to lower prices for those same taxpayers? Seems kinda selfish.
At any rate, there should be something done to increase our domestic cattle production

>>
>>541307986
The interesting thing is that despite the dramatic decrease in herd size, the actual beef production has remained at that peak production level. This suggests that there has been a massive increase in the intensity of beef farming. It has become a science rather than just letting cattle graze and harvesting whatever the land itself supports.

They had their chance, for years.

I've had Argentine steaks, they're amazing, it's time to open that market. The cattle industry in America is going to have to step it up, better quality, lower costs, make people buy American because it's better.
