Thousands upon thousands of residents in Gary, Indiana have been without power for over 12 days now. This is environmental racism through and through. Only 4 lineman have been shot so far, out of the hundreds working to repair the outage. This is uncalled for! >>541311402Gary, Indiana has been a lost cause for decades. I accidentally took the wrong exit heading to chiraq and ended up in Gary. It was terrifying. You don’t stop at stop signs or stop lights there. You do everything you can to get out of there immediately.

I live in a upper middle class, over 90% white suburb of a major city and we went four and a half days without power three years ago when storms came through and knocked down a huge number of trees. Nobody was taking shots at the utility workers and people were out clearing whatever debris they could that didn't require heavy equipment. In poor neighborhoods they tend to expect the government to do everything for them. The community doing the small stuff so the city crews can focus on the big items makes it easier for the utilities to be accessed and restored.
