Armenia did this until Azerbaijan started getting hungry at fixing their border gore (these two countries have always fought over territory when not being directly dominated by Russian empires). Armenia called on Russia to help and got some really half-assed peace keeping that led to them losing their exclave and being ethnically cleansed ("only" about 100k got driven out but still a big deal because the nations cared about territory too).With Russia so unwilling to do anything Armenia is making a bet towards the west. Who knows if Russia cares enough to intervene. They don't really have much interests there except legacy but obviously would prefer to have control.What makes it tricky is that Russia cares a lot more about Azerbaijan. They really want to complete a rail project through their lands to Iran. Azerbaijan is a closer ally to Türkiye but is open to Russian interests too. Armenia just have no good options which is why it's gambling on EU even if that's a weak attempt and the candidate position would probably mostly be there to show intent.
