It’s Time to Apologize to Ukrainians

...
With Russia continuing to make advances in the war, it seems clear that Ukraine will eventually be forced back to the negotiating table. It is likely to get a worse deal than the one it was pushed to abandon four years ago. And since then, hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or injured, millions have left or been displaced, the economy, environment, and infrastructure have been devastated, and land has been lost. It is time to apologize to Ukrainians for pushing them off the path of negotiations in the first months of the war.

---------

you nafo tards itt surely got a lot to apologize for. lying in every breath about this conflict

Where do we go from here? Russia controls Pokrovsk and appears to control most of Kostiantynivka. Its forces are approaching Druzhkivka with fighting moving toward Sloviansk and Kramatorsk (Ukraine’s main remaining positions in the Donbas). The advance is slow and costly but Russia has the manpower and resources to sustain a long war. It is increasing missile production and can mobilize additional forces. Ukraine still faces manpower constraints, shortages of Patriot interceptors, and a large defense funding gap that leaves it dependent on foreign support. Ukrainian counterattacks and strikes on Russian refineries and warehouses impose some costs but do not change this imbalance. Russia does not need to occupy all of Ukraine either btw. It can continue attacking Ukrainian forces and infrastructure, press for the remaining Donbas, and wait for Western support to weaken. Ukraine can accept the loss of territory now or continue a war that consumes its manpower, finances, and infrastructure.

Vance posted articles in a magazine he is politically aligned with. Vance carries enormous political power in the world through his position and may influence the EU and other actors

Russian schools will replace traditional lesson bells with musical compositions by Soviet and contemporary authors from Sept. 1, the Ministry of Enlightenment said on Monday.
The “Melodies Instead of Bells” project, launched in November 2024, will operate in every region. Repertoires change monthly and are linked to commemorative dates. For September the ministry selected “kind and inspiring” songs about school, knowledge, teachers, friendship and discovery. Among them are “Two Times Two Is Four” performed by the Bolshoi Children’s Choir named after Viktor Popov, Denis Maidanov’s “Song of the Firsts,” Yuri Entin’s “First-Grader” and Eduard Khil’s recording of “They Teach at School.”
The ministry said the initiative aims to broaden pupils’ knowledge of Russian culture, history and traditions and to create a warmer school atmosphere that encourages discussion of important dates and values. In November 2025, ahead of National Unity Day, schools played “My Brothers,” “Mother Russia,” “Dear Russia,” “We Are United! Invincible!” and Maidanov’s “The Flag of My State.”
The programme forms part of wider patriotic-education measures. Since Sept. 1, 2025, music lessons have included recommended patriotic works by contemporary performers including Yaroslav Dronov (Shaman) and Oleg Gazmanov. First deputy chairman of the State Duma education committee Mikhail Berulava has argued the approach should also cover kindergartens, describing the songs of Gazmanov and Shaman as “an excellent start for upbringing.”
Schools continue to run the “Conversations About Important Things” series, introduced in September 2022. Lessons address the military operation in Ukraine and include meetings with its participants, some of whom have criminal records or previously served in private military companies.

The Russian Finance Ministry has submitted draft government resolutions granting a one-year tax and social-contribution deferral to Wildberries and sellers whose goods were destroyed or damaged in Ukrainian drone strikes on the marketplace’s warehouses.
Companies and individual entrepreneurs with losses exceeding 5% of annual income may postpone payment of VAT (excluding import VAT), profit tax, simplified-system taxes, insurance contributions and related advances due between August 2026 and July 2027. The deferred amounts are then to be repaid in equal monthly instalments over the following year. Tax and contribution audits of affected firms are suspended until the end of 2026. Parallel relief applies to the RVB group, Wildberries’ parent company.
Strikes have damaged 23 Wildberries warehouses, eliminating roughly a quarter of its logistics capacity. Analysts estimate total losses, including destroyed merchandise, at about 800 billion rubles.
Business associations had sought broader support. The Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs proposed preferential lending and the ability to book lost stock as losses; the Association of Internet Trade Companies called for direct financial aid and state risk insurance.
Attacks continue. Ukrainian drones struck four large Ozon warehouses overnight into 24 August.
Direct budget compensation is constrained by a federal deficit of 6.5 trillion rubles in the first seven months of 2026. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said the deferral package would reduce financial and administrative pressure and allow recovery. Economic Development Minister Maxim Reshetnikov said the measures would support the platform’s supply chain and give entrepreneurs a realistic chance to keep operating.

The Central Bank has already recommended that banks restructure loans for affected businesses. President Vladimir Putin has ordered the government to draw up a programme to restore damaged logistics capacity, including with state participation.
Some sellers described the relief as useful only for those who lost part of their inventory. One furniture supplier who lost 95% of annual stock at a warehouse in Elektrostal said the business was being closed. Others who lost goods worth tens of millions of rubles said compensation for the value of destroyed merchandise would have been more effective, and warned that deferred taxes would still fall due later.

Russian state institutions have sharply increased fuel purchases since early August, with prices on government tenders in several regions exceeding official averages and, in some cases, matching or surpassing European retail levels.
From 7 August the government suspended the special Federal Antimonopoly Service formula previously used to set the initial maximum price of state contracts for motor fuel. Budget organisations may now procure at the market prices offered by suppliers. The change, in force until the end of 2026, was introduced to prevent supply failures amid volatile wholesale quotes.
Tenders posted on the official procurement portal between 10 and 17 August totalled 9.2 billion rubles — double the previous week and nine times the volume recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, according to the source data.
Agricultural managers in the Urals and Krasnodar Territory said regional officials had urged farms to stockpile fuel “at any price,” citing possible further tightening in autumn. One farmer linked the rush to the 5 August decision allowing production of higher-sulphur, lower-ecological-class gasoline; quality fuel is being secured before expected deliveries of lower-grade product that could damage turbocharged engines common on modern Russian and Belarusian machinery.
Average prices in government tenders ran 13–20% above the Rosstat consumer averages published on 19 August. In Magadan Region one research institute paid 278 rubles per litre for AI-92 and 275 rubles for diesel against a Rosstat figure of 86 rubles. In Krasnoyarsk Territory an airport procurement listed diesel well above the regional Rosstat average of 97 rubles. Sevastopol and the Artek camp in Crimea recorded AI-95 and diesel purchases above 220 rubles per litre. Comparable premiums appeared in Dagestan. Chechnya was an exception, with at least one tender below the Rosstat average.

European Commission data for mid-August put the EU average for 95-octane petrol at roughly 186 rubles per litre (Malta lowest, Denmark highest). Several Russian regional tender prices exceeded that benchmark.
The surge occurs against a backdrop of prolonged fuel-market strain, extended export restrictions and permission for lower-quality gasoline production.

Three children aged 13, 15 and 16 were killed when debris from a downed Ukrainian drone struck a private children’s centre in Krasnodar during a large-scale overnight UAV attack, Russia’s presidential commissioner for children’s rights Maria Lvova-Belova said.
Six other children were hospitalised with shrapnel wounds, burns and concussions; their condition was described as moderate. Krasnodar Territory Governor Veniamin Kondratyev said the centre, located in a two-storey building in the city’s Prikubansky district and offering round-the-clock stays, was hit by falling debris. Local reports described the facility as a private “nature kindergarten” or boarding house.
Regional authorities reported a total of 12 people injured across Krasnodar Territory, with 10 hospitalised. Debris also struck a five-storey residential building.
The same night’s strikes targeted logistics centres of the Ozon marketplace, Russia’s second-largest online retailer. Ozon confirmed a fire at its facility near Krasnodar and said warehouses in Adygeysk (Adygea), Nevinnomyssk (Stavropol Territory) and near Makhachkala (Dagestan) were also attacked; all sites suspended operations. Monitoring channels reported an additional fire at a Kuchenland Home warehouse in Krasnodar.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy urged China on Monday to respond more firmly to Russian nuclear rhetoric, saying Beijing should no longer remain silent.
In an address marking Ukraine’s Independence Day, Zelenskyy said China must not stay indifferent when statements about the possible use of nuclear weapons are made in Russia. “China should no longer remain silent,” he said. “When someone dresses up in a sailor’s suit and a side cap and, poorly pronouncing the words, talks about a nuclear strike, China must react and cool his ardour.”
The remarks referred to recent Pacific Fleet exercises in which Russian President Vladimir Putin wore a naval uniform. On 20 August the cruiser Varyag, the nuclear submarine Omsk and the Bastion coastal missile system conducted missile strikes against notional targets near the Southern Kuril Islands.
Zelenskyy said China should use its influence to confirm its standing as a leading power on international security issues, not only in economic and technological fields. “China must confirm its ambitions as one of the world leaders … and make clear that no dictators should threaten the planet with their old warheads,” he added.
In July Zelenskyy said European partners had informed him that Beijing had delivered a firm message to Moscow that the use of nuclear weapons is unacceptable. China has repeatedly called on Russia and Ukraine to return to negotiations and achieve a ceasefire.

In Russia, critical infrastructure will be seized from owners if they do not protect it from drones

Putin signed a decree that allows transferring to temporary state administration facilities whose owners have not ensured their safety from drone attacks.

These are enterprises of the fuel and energy complex, energy, communications, as well as industrial, transport and logistics facilities. The list also includes other structures that are important for the economic stability and security of the Russian Federation.

Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin said Telegram has temporarily suspended his chat, citing “illegal” content.
In a message from the messenger’s administration that Nadezhdin published, moderators said some material in the group was illegal and that the group had been suspended to allow cleanup. Telegram said the chat would be restored if the content was removed and reasonable moderation was promised in future. Nadezhdin said he did not know what material had triggered the action and asked subscribers for clarification.
Nadezhdin, who sought the Russian presidency in 2024 but was denied registration by the Central Election Commission over invalid signatures, had planned to run as an independent for the State Duma this year. On 10 July the Justice Ministry designated him a foreign agent. Days later an administrative case was opened over a link to a 2023 stream containing a photograph of Alexei Navalny; he was fined 1,000 rubles.
In late July he ended his campaign, saying legal political activity in Russia was exhausted for him, and left the country. He later posted a video from Paris stating he was alive and free. An administrative protocol was subsequently drawn up over an interview published by Meduza channels, under the article on disseminating materials of an undesirable organisation.

Shares in Ozon, Russia’s second-largest online marketplace, fell sharply on the Moscow Exchange on Monday after the company reported a series of Ukrainian drone strikes on its warehouses.
The stock dropped as much as 27% at one point to 2,112.5 rubles, its lowest level since August 2023, wiping about 185 billion rubles ($2.2 billion) off the company’s market value in minutes. Trading was briefly suspended and a discrete auction was introduced. By midday the decline had narrowed to roughly 19%. The shares are down about 47% so far this year.
Ozon said six of its facilities had been affected over three days. Weekend strikes hit sites in the Samara and Orenburg regions. Overnight into Monday drones struck a logistics centre near Krasnodar and one in Makhachkala, where a fire broke out and several people were injured. Warehouses in Adygeysk and Nevinnomyssk were evacuated as a precaution; the company said those sites and their goods were undamaged.
Shares in AFK Sistema, which holds a substantial stake in Ozon, fell more than 12% to multi-year lows. The broader Moscow Exchange index declined about 2.5%. Analysts said the attacks and elevated geopolitical risk were weighing on the market and that Ozon might pause dividend payments while the operational impact remains unclear. Cumulative losses at larger rival Wildberries from earlier warehouse strikes have been estimated in the hundreds of billions of rubles, potentially approaching 1 trillion including sellers’ goods.

Russian printed circuit board manufacturers have asked the Ministry of Industry and Trade to ease localisation rules, warning that a mandatory switch to domestic raw materials risks production delays and sharp cost increases.
In a letter dated 19 August the ANO Consortium of Printed Circuit Boards, which includes Yadro, GS Group, Rezonit and Tekhnotekh, told the ministry that shortages of Russian materials linked to sanctions have already caused shipment disruptions and strained customer relations. Compulsory use of domestic materials under planned updates to Government Decree No. 719 could disrupt output in the peak fourth quarter and raise material costs by two to eight times, the consortium said.
It proposed excluding the mandatory requirement until at least three to five suppliers exist for each critical input, and awarding only additional localisation points for Russian materials during a transition period.
Electronics maker Fplus said Chinese boards and raw materials remain 40–60% cheaper than Russian alternatives. Materials account for more than 40% of a board’s cost and are normally chosen by the customer, consortium director Olga Kozhukhovskaya noted. She added that many products labelled domestic rely on imported inputs and that declared specifications have sometimes failed to match actual performance.
An independent materials expert said stable large-batch supplies from Russian producers remain limited and that complex boards still lack full import substitutes. The domestic market totalled 123 million square decimetres in 2025, of which about 24% was locally produced.

State television presenter Dmitry Kiselyov will no longer host the flagship weekly programme “Vesti Nedeli” on Rossiya 1, the VGTRK holding said on Monday.
He will be replaced by television host and former State Duma deputy Yevgeny Popov. Kiselyov, 72, had presented the Sunday programme since 2012. VGTRK said he would remain on air with a new authorial show titled “Kiselyov,” due to start on 6 September and air at 22:00 on Sundays, offering his personal view of major events.
The change confirms earlier reports that the presidential administration was dissatisfied with Kiselyov, citing falling audience interest and accumulated complaints. “Vesti Nedeli” remains one of the most-watched programmes on Russian state television. Its 12 July episode reached 6.1% of the audience according to Mediascope, placing it in the weekly top five; comparable Sunday programmes on Channel One and other channels recorded lower figures. Reach for Kiselyov’s show has declined from 8.1% in late August 2024 to 6.6% in February 2026.
The programme has long served as a platform for official narratives on the war in Ukraine and relations with the West. Kiselyov has been known for outspoken on-air remarks, including comments in 2012 about blood and organ donation by gay people, a 2014 statement that Russia could turn the United States into “radioactive ash,” and later references to nuclear capabilities against Britain.

Ukrainian officials say Russian forces have fielded drones equipped with Nvidia Jetson Orin mini-computers that can independently select and strike targets.
Ukraine’s domestic intelligence service showed The New York Times two guidance systems recovered from drones used in Zaporizhzhia between May and July. Analysis of the chips indicated that, unlike earlier AI-assisted systems that still required a human operator to confirm a target, the Jetson Orin now takes the final strike decision. One such drone killed three people on 6 July while approaching a petrol station, according to air-defence officials.
Ukrainian experts said petrol stations are among the object types the systems are programmed to recognise. Human-rights groups, including the Red Cross, have opposed autonomous target selection by computers in weapons.
Ukraine’s military intelligence also reported finding a Jetson Orin module in a new Russian air-launched hybrid weapon, the S-71M “Monochrome,” which combines cruise-missile and loitering-munition characteristics and can search an area before independently identifying targets.
The Nvidia module was mounted on a circuit board marked “Made in China.” Nvidia said the Jetson Orin is a consumer product sold to students, developers and start-ups, is not sold directly in Russia, and is available only on secondary markets that the company cannot control. The firm added that the devices are not intended for military use.

The Kremlin said Russia will continue regular strikes on Kyiv in response to Ukrainian drone attacks on commercial infrastructure, including warehouses of the Ozon marketplace.
Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “responses in Kyiv are felt every day, every night and will continue to be felt.” He added that attacks on commercial facilities had not altered the dynamics on the front.
The comments followed an interview in which President Vladimir Putin said the Ukrainian leadership had opened a “Pandora’s box” by seeking to damage the Russian economy. Putin said Russia would respond against Ukraine’s most sensitive economic sectors, including agriculture, which he described as already under severe strain. He called strikes on civilian infrastructure in Kyiv and other cities “effective” and “timely,” saying they disrupt the delivery of equipment and ammunition, hinder troop rotations and limit the ability of Ukrainian defence enterprises to improve weapons.
Putin has previously maintained that Ukrainian drone campaigns against Russian oil refineries, Wildberries warehouses and Black and Azov Sea ports have not produced critical consequences for Russia. Ukrainian strikes have hit Russian refineries more than 70 times since the start of 2026, reducing processing volumes to multi-year lows. Wildberries has reported the loss of 23 warehouses and roughly a quarter of its logistics capacity. Grain shipments through Azov Sea ports and Novorossiysk terminals have been repeatedly disrupted. In recent days Ukrainian drones have struck at least six Ozon facilities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine had no role in the 2022 explosions that damaged the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea.
Speaking to journalists during a meeting with leaders of the Nordic-Baltic Eight, Zelenskyy said the matter had been discussed at a high level with Germany. “They know perfectly well that Ukraine stood neither behind the execution nor behind the conception of the corresponding operation,” he said. Ukraine was ready to assist the investigation and its Prosecutor General’s Office and Foreign Ministry were already engaged, he added, stressing the importance of preserving European partnerships and trust.
The pipelines were damaged by explosions on the night of 26 September 2022 near the Danish island of Bornholm; three of the four strings were affected. A Wall Street Journal investigation previously reported that a group of Ukrainian military personnel planned the operation, that Zelenskyy initially approved it but later ordered a halt after a CIA warning, and that then-Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi allegedly disregarded the order.
In August 2025 Italy arrested retired Ukrainian captain Serhiy Kuznetsov at Germany’s request; he was extradited and is on trial in Germany. Diving instructor Volodymyr Zhuravlyov was detained in Poland in September 2025 but released after extradition was refused; he was re-arrested in Croatia on 19 August 2026. German prosecutors say he was among the divers who planted explosives near Bornholm.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has previously urged Germany not to pursue criminal charges against those responsible, saying those who built the pipelines, not those who disabled them, should feel shame.

Residents of at least 17 Russian regions have reported violent detentions and coercion into signing Defence Ministry contracts over the past six weeks, human-rights groups told the outlet Verstka.
The School of the Conscript recorded complaints in July and August from Udmurtia, Primorye, the Irkutsk, Ryazan and Arkhangelsk regions, Buryatia and Russian-controlled parts of Donetsk. The group Go by the Forest received 18 similar appeals over two months from the Penza, Amur, Orenburg and Jewish Autonomous regions, Krasnodar and Khabarovsk territories, and the cities of Izhevsk, Omsk, Blagoveshchensk and Ulan-Ude. Call to Conscience logged 18 complaints of forced recruitment in the same period, including from Ulyanovsk, Vladivostok, Penza, Izhevsk, Kirov, Omsk, Udmurtia and Bashkortostan.
Most victims belong to vulnerable groups — men with alcohol or drug problems, mental-health issues, older or physically ill people, those living alone or with legal troubles — according to Timofey Vaskin of the School of the Conscript.
Go by the Forest described specific cases: a man in Novorossiysk taken to a police station, beaten, framed with drugs and forced to sign; a man in Arkhangelsk oblast detained for street drinking and sent to the front; a man in Omsk removed from his workplace, held and signed for; and a man in Udmurtia taken off a psychiatric register and dispatched to the Donetsk region.
Grigory Sverdlin, director of Go by the Forest, said authorities are finding fewer volunteers and are increasing pressure on people with debts, open investigations or recent licence suspensions. Call to Conscience advised residents in affected regions to monitor local news, grant powers of attorney to relatives, avoid drinking alone and never sign a contract.

Russia appears to be preparing a new series of tests of its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile at the Pankovo range on Novaya Zemlya, according to satellite imagery and open-source analysis.
The Barents Observer reported that two Il-976 SKIP telemetry aircraft arrived at Rogachevo airfield on the Arctic archipelago between 22 and 23 August, joining an A-50U airborne early-warning aircraft and several An-26 transports escorted by helicopters. Support vessels in the Barents and Kara Seas that have previously monitored Burevestnik flights have also begun moving into position. Russia issued a NOTAM closing airspace near the islands.
Late August has traditionally marked the start of the seasonal test window for the missile, one of the strategic systems President Vladimir Putin first publicly described in 2018. Western analysts and officials have long referred to it as a “flying Chernobyl” because of its nuclear propulsion system, which can leave a radioactive trail and risks contaminating the impact area if it crashes.
U.S. intelligence assessed that early tests in 2018–19 all failed; one recovery operation in 2019 after a crash in the Barents Sea killed seven people, including scientists from the Sarov nuclear centre, and produced a radiation plume that reached Scandinavia. Russia claimed successful long-duration flights in 2023 and again in October 2025, when Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov told Putin the missile had flown 14,000 km in 15 hours; no launch video was released. Putin said in May that development was in its final stage.
