It was an impossibility to argue that the Germans could outproduce America in war or get conquered by Germany in a land invasion, everyone knew this from the normal German citizen to Hitler himself. Their rationale behind thinking they could win a war against America was to convince themselves that Americans were weak in character and spirit, and so they would quit fighting the war after facing setbacks in combat due to how far away it was and how (seemingly) unconcerned the average American was towards active involvement in a war in Europe. They didn't account for the fact that Americans are still extremely proud people and the attack on Pearl Harbor made the majority of them want revenge against Japan and Germany (who declared war on the US first).
