It's so comical.

MMT is the magic money tree. It doesn't work. It's a scam. Credit money is only worth something if it comes back. I can explain a little bit of the thought process. Happens all the time, total and utter nothingburger.

Not very long ago Janet Yellen began a program of bond repurchases. The Fed buys older bonds that no longer trade very much while it keeps issuing new bonds that are more heavily traded. Investors who do not want to hold the less liquid “off-the-run” bonds can sell those to Treasury and use the proceeds to buy the more liquid “on the run bonds.”

The Treasury is now buying those bonds and this has happened many, many, many times before.

It is though. The government debt that the central banks hold is worth something because of the ability of the government to murder and rob the people. It's a valuable asset, at least as long as the government is willing and able to steal everything they owe. If the government doesn't have to pay the credit sum back, then the government debt is worth zero. But banks and central banks need assets to back the money they owe. A banknote is a debt of the central bank, a credit balance at a bank is a debt of that bank. No one accepts that debt as payment if the bank has no assets.

R U FOOL? We saw what happened in 2022 when the UK's former female prime minister's policies caused the gilt market to completely implode, forcing the Bank of England to aggressively U-turn and bail out its own pension funds.

To fix this mess, the US needs to immediately slash the bloated federal budget, rein in out-of-control spending, and overhaul tax policies to genuinely boost revenues instead of relying on endless money-printing and desperate TGA raids.

The US is practically on the verge of entering the ICU.

Debt-to-GDP is past the point of no return, and interest payments have officially eclipsed the entire defense budget. Traditional foreign financial pillars like Japan are completely tapped out and have zero dry powder left to buy US bonds after burning through everything to defend the yen, leaving nobody else to absorb this trash.

But it is not completely hopeless. What matters more than the absolute size of the debt is whether a country can service the interest. If a nation can cover the interest, it can keep the state running.

That is how European nations with over 100 percent debt to GDP like France, the UK, Spain, Italy, and Greece manage to stay afloat.

In addition, since NOBODY here knows economics here is what's happening

In normal times, rising stock prices and optimism about the economy typically mean falling bond prices and rising bond yields. Falling stock prices are usually correlated with rising bond prices and falling yields, as investors engage in a flight to safety. When the Fed was engaged in extraordinary COVID monetary manipulation this relationship broke down, and bond and stock prices often moved together.

What we’re seeing is a return to a normal, healthy financial market.
>oh nooo not the normal bond market!
That's how retarded you guys are

The way you check, which every investor knows, is the Fed Reserve surveys on manufacturing. The New York Fed’s Empire State index rose five points to 20.6 in August, more than double the consensus forecast and its highest level in more than four years.

The Philadelphia Fed’s index climbed to 47.4 from an already elevated 41.4, crushing expectations for a decline to around 25.

If central banks could just monetize endless debt without any consequences, poverty wouldn't exist and every failed state in history would still be thriving.

But reality is, when market confidence completely collapses, countries are bound to end up just like Zimbabwe or Venezuela.

The reality is that the US needs to drastically slash wasteful spending, accept its losses and pay massive reparations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz oil supply chain, and find ways to boost tax revenues for the rest of the term to pay down the debt from there

Interest-to-GDP is what matters. If debt interest outpaces GDP growth, you're heading straight to hell, as vital funds get burned entirely on past debts instead of the current generation.

Right now, America is in an extremely razor-thin state where growth barely edges out rising interest costs.

Is there a single bot here that knows economics?

The bond purchases do not reduce the amount of indebtedness or move the maturity of U.S. government debt, they aren’t an effective rescue or counter to market distress. This is not QE, where the Fed monetizes debt. It’s just a trade-in deal for bonds. Why? Because the economy is too good to buy long term bonds so the Treasury buys those back like they've done many times before

Basically. That's a huge problem as Israel will not give up its attack dog quietly.
> Problem is america has fallen behind militarily and is about to get their shit pushed in
Yep. China is just watching from the sidelines but everyone knows they can't be bullied into submission. Look at what happened in Iran, the mighty US army got its ass handed by someone with 1/20 the attack power China can come up with.
At some point China will waltz into Taiwan and sweep it up. The US will watch dick in hand. The media complex will spin it up as some sort of diplomatic necessity, like they've spun the Iran debacle into some sort of "we're drawing/nobody knows what's going on really" and it worked, so they can do that too. Reality is though that the US influence has dwindled fast, but the US economic grasp on the world's economy is still firm. Way firmer than it should be. Everyone knows that, US/Israel included. Trump is there to assist with the dismantling of the US empire - that's the reason they put him there, to take the blame for it all. It's all working flawlessly so far.

Yeah.. The US is probably facing the biggest crossroads in its entire history right now.

Ever since bribery was legalized and rebranded as lobbying post WWII, the US political establishment has been completely hijacked by the pro-Israel lobby. And that contradiction has finally reached its absolute breaking point.

It has literally come down to this: abandon the defense of Israel to save the American economy, or completely bankrupt the US just to keep protecting them.

There is nobody left to buy US debt. Traditional foreign ATMs like Japan are completely fucked right now and have zero dry powder left to bail you out.

It's zero-sum now. You have to choose between Israel and the USA

>>541339349
Nobody said "without any consequences". This is you inserting your own biases and framing.

The constraint is REAL RESOURCES. Actual physical stuff and stuff that makes more stuff. Again, Zimbabwe RAN OUT OF STUFF. They say a ~60% drop in real agricultural output during their farm seizures. Rest assured, if the blacks had been able to maintain the same level of output, there would not be any hyperinflation because it is always based on real output, not "confidence".

So yes, poverty IS in fact manipulated. It's manipulated by people who pretend governments need to "acquire" money first from somewhere else. This doesn't mean you should just give people money -- the point is that the resources available to a country can always afford to be exploited to the best of that country's ability. That will vary from country to country, as some have fewer resources or less capacity to make use of them. But the government can always afford to hire people to try to make the best use of them.

Arguing with you people is a complete waste of time. You just want to protect the racket.

But this isn't a crossroads, it's a foregone conclusion because the golems are too complacent, too broken and subservient. The crossroads begin when people can't feed themselves anymore

Gold has value insofar as it is used for productive industrial and chemical processes. People who dig gold up from one hole in the ground just to store it in another hole in the ground are just pretending.

Now, you will try to say "but gold is real money". Money is whatever the State says it is. There is no good reason to limit your ability to engage in meaningful economic activity to the store of gold you have. It's like a carpenter hired to build your house and he has all the tools and the lumber and he tells you he can't get started because he "ran out of inches". Goldbugs are parasites who want to be able to choke off people they deem to be lesser.

Sure, Zimbabwe ran out of physical output, but why did they run out??? Because hyperinflation completely destroyed economic incentives, crushed production, and caused a total collapse of faith in the currency.

You can have all the physical resources in the world, but the moment the market loses trust and refuses to accept your unbacked paper for those resources, your entire system grinds to a halt.

And that is precisely the brutal reality staring America right now.

You need to drastically slash bloated spending, accept your losses and pay massive reparations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz oil supply chain, and overhaul taxes to actually boost revenues.

If you don't fix the core numbers before debt interest completely outpaces GDP growth, you aren't just going to default, you are heading straight to hell.

To put it simply, you are just going to get crushed to death under 40 trillion dollars.

No, you have this completely backwards. Zimbabwe saw a collapse in their agricultural output because they seized farms from White farmers who knew what they were doing and handed those farms over to blacks who had been loyal to the revolution.

Rest assured, however far fetched this scenario is, is those blacks had produced the same agricultural output there would not have been any hyperinflation in Zimbabwe.

But I get it, you have a narrative and a framing that you are committed to. Almost certainly because your livelihood depends on it. It's not that deep.

>How the hell is that any different from just printing money like crazy?
It's waaaaaaay more retarded. The Treasury General Account is the Federal government's bank account more or less. It is fed with deposits from things like Medicare premiums and Social Security payments although in reality about 70% of it is intragovernmental debt aka the IOUs Congress has been writing to the Social Security Administration for the last 40 years or so.
That means he really only has ~$280 billion to play with. Mind, this is the money that is earmarked for silly things like actually paying Social Security benefits. Incidentally this is also where all cash seized by the Feds when you get pulled over near the border with a lot of cash which for some reason I still don't understand doesn't have the same 5th Amendment rights as you do.
Bottom line, if this intervention fails, which it will, retirees and people who successfully sue the Federal government for their unlawfully seized cash might get Treasury bonds back in lieu of Federal Reserve Notes.

That isn't hyperinflation. The US M2 is about 23 trillion. Injecting another 40 trillion would cut the value of your money to about a third of what it currently is. It would be horrible for the average person, yes, but not hyperinflationary. In Canada during covid our money got devalued to around two thirds of what it was before. So you'd basically just be looking at that, but twice as bad. Everyone would be made quite poor but it wouldn't immediately collapse the economy.
>>
>>541341123
>>541341172
First of all, why do you think agricultural output collapsed when the farms were seized? Because printing worthless fiat and forcing a regime shift completely destroyed economic stability and technical capability in the first place. You cannot separate physical production from the monetary trust that incentivizes it.

Second, Domestic workers are going to reject your trash paper the second it loses purchasing power. You cannot eat dollars or burn greenbacks for heat when your entire country relies on foreign energy imports.

you are talking about a completely different type of buyback that functions as a quality of life improvement, and is valued in the billions (not even tens of billions) most of the time

this is a completely different operation that is meant to artificially manipulate the bond market as an emergency measure and is valued at nearly a trillion
>>
>>541344820
The Treasury announced that it was going to raise the amount of 20 and 30 year bonds it was willing to buy from $2 billion at each reverse auction to $4 billion and this caused the fake news jewsnto kvetch.
This is always done when the economy is good and banks want more liquidity so wish to sell bonds.

Treasury bonds compete with other securities for investor dollars. When investors think other investment opportunities are rising, they require higher returns in exchange for buying the government’s bonds. The way this is accomplished in the secondary market is that they pay less for bonds held by other investors, which pushes up the yield on the bond. Buy for less means yielding more. The Treasury steps in and says we'll take those back so you can start lending again because manufacturing in the US has skyrocketed because of shit Trump did last year requiring all global corps to build American plants.

It's a total nothing burger Greece sir
