To really master any social science or natural science today, for instance, you need knowledge of a large chunk of undergraduate mathematics. He probably reads a lot of wiki articles and pop sci books, and maybe some philosophy or humanities scholarship. If someone had taught him math and a little CS in his late teens/early 20s he probably could have been a very successful "mainstream" academic.
