The Japanese shinkansen only works because Japan basically has a straight line very populated corridor called the Taiheiyo belt.
Meanwhile China build too many train lines because of their top-down government push, and it's hilarious because the average chink can't afford riding a high speed rail to go from one part of China to the other. Only certain corridors between big cities like shang hai are actually profitable while the rest is losing big money. Western tourists will glaze the Chinese bullet train as high tech and amazing, but no one talks about how the huge train stations are almost empty lol.
And most of the "high tech" stuff people worship about china are just a bunch of light bulbs strategically placed. Btw in a normal country the government would put that money so the sewage and roads in rural areas are working.
I can't believe how dumb people are to fall for the china worship.

America is way too spread out and a sparcely populated for high-speed rail.
The ONLY exception is the northeast corridor between Washington and Boston.

In Japan, we have local bus services that take you to rural stations and rural trains that connect to larger trains in big cities which connect to the high-speed rails that go to other cities in Japan. So you can basically commute to places without a car. But in America, once you take a bullet train from one place another you're still going to have to take a car and drive a few hours. It just doesn't make any sense

Using the figures we've been discussing:

1. National median annual income

¥36,231/year

2. Convert to monthly income

¥36,231 ÷ 12 = ¥3,019.25/month

3. Convert to working-day income

Assume 250 working days/year:

¥36,231 ÷ 250 = ¥144.92 per working day

4. Guangzhou Shanghai HSR ticket

Assume a ¥900 second-class ticket.

5. Calculate days of work

¥900 ÷ ¥144.92 = 6.21 working days

Result

¥36,231/year ¥144.92 per working day ¥900 train ticket 6.21 working days

Btw I can go from Osaka to Tokyo with one day wage easily.

AND consider the chinese rail are heavily subsidized or they're actually discount tickets running on red

China is retarded for building as much HSR as they did because only 15% of it is economically viable. Their main line from Bejing to Shanghai is cool I guess.

>Guangzhou Shanghai HSR ticket
According to this website: https://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/shanghai-guangzhou-highspeed.htm
You can buy an overnight sleeper train ticket for CNY 474 - 480, divide 474 by your number that makes about 3.21 working days, which I'd say is pretty fair for the huge distance you're covering (1,438 km), Japan is ~3,000 km end to end btw
>>
>>541368237
>Comparing Guangzhou-Shanghai to Tokyo-Osaka

One is 1790km long, the other is 515km, over triple the distance, what a shit comparison. Is Chinese HSR more expensive than Japan compared to income? Sure. Yet it is clearly not unaffordable since literally billions of trips are made yearly.

>but muh it’s not making le profit

Public transport is not meant to be for extracting profits from the public. Also, it doesn’t need to be profitable in itself to be profitable overall for the nation. Countless man hours, litres of diesel/petrol/avgas, maintenance on ancient tech, etc wasted that now are not. Also, it means their main public transport is no longer reliant on oil.

The have old trains doing routes in the mountains to this day.
This is because old slow trains are suitable for mountain rocks, many sharp turns, only small villages dispersed here and there, so they apply common sense, this area has farmers who need to bring goods to the markets, but they don't need hyper modern trains, so slow engines are fine.

Then they have big population centers of +10 million each, they obviously connect these with highspeed rail.

They also have backup diesel trains, just in case the Mutts and Japs attack their electric power plants.
Basically they have a use case for each level of the technology.

The problem with socialism is that when the central government collects all your money and tries to create a a benefit-based system out of it, it's much easier to pour money into centralized cities because the infrastructure is shared by everybody else.

But if you're a free-spirited American like me that wants to have their own homestead, their government's basically stealing your money to build infrastructure that you'll basically never ever use.

>Public transport is not meant to be for extracting profits from the public
Yeah retard, but if you dont even have enough people using a line to pay for itself, then what the fuck is the point of running it? "Economically feasible" means that it will pay for itself, if it will that is a market signal that it is a good thing, a valuable and necessary thing. If not enough people see value in it to pay for it, what makes you think its worthwhile to create to begin with? So you can brag on Korean basketweaving forums that your country built a bunch of under utilized infrastructure to 'own the Capitalists' ?

You can run empty trains all night, it doesnt mean you should. I know you are a stupid chinkbug on an AUS VPN so you probably dont understand the concept. But if you build out HSR and its not economically feasible, that money could have been better spent elsewhere. If people arent using it anywhere near capacity, then what the fuck was the point of building it? Do you need something that people arent going to use?

This is the problem with the Chinkbug brain you built out the HSR way past where it should go, do you think that impresses foreigners? Your own people wont use it to the point of funding its own operation........next time just pay people to dig holes and then fill them back in, at least then you wont waste the building materials and start incurring maintenance costs for no reason LMAO

It has to do with how their airspace rules work that make direct flight between city A and B impossible without taking some extremely convoluted detours. You're 100% correct that many of the lines aren't exactly optimal for use by everyday citizens and wouldn't make sense with Japan Rails model of integrating land use and retail within each station to subsidize the operations of the network and make the land more valuable simultaneously.

True. China is overpowered industrially. It’s like they learned everything from the Economic Shock Therapy of former Warsaw Pact (decided that was dogshit), learned from Korea and Japan, and internal experiences. They came to a synthesis where key input industries like steel, defense, chemicals, petrochemicals, minerals, finance, telecoms, utilities, and machine tools remain State owned Enterprises.

Then they took that central planning capacity for infrastructure to create vertically integrated supply chains that less vital sectors could build off of.

So instead of mass deindustrialization and unemployment it provides a platform for further economic growth with cheap inputs. Westerners, Africa, India, and other Asian countries can’t compete with it. Their labor isn’t even cheap by global standards anymore it’s just they have everything so perfectly integrated. It’s what happens when you have much of the government made up of by engineers. It’s amazing.

Tbf Japan and Korea already have fairly vertically integrated industry and pretty logical planning within a Capitalist system, but they also just don't have the natural resources and people that China does. I still think Japan, Korea, and the Republic of China have other things going for them. I'd love to hear your input JapanAnon if there is anything I overlooked. Subsidies or whatever excuses Americans make up why Japan, Korea, and the Republic of China can build actually build stuff and America can't explain everything. Asia just plans better.

What really makes Japan Rail profitable is they use the land nearby stations and right of way to develop apartments and retail space. Japan is still ridiculously clean and crime free compared to the west. So these orderly public spaces despite an aging demographic do wonders to generate revenue for the rail system.

China is smart and implements a similar system but the goal is more political and has to do with the number of people and how restricted their airspace is to where air travel is just not the best way to get around much of China.

why is the government building high speed rail a bad thing?
why does infrastructure always have to be profitable instead of useful?

Arguably, I think Americas obsession with interregional high speed rail is kind of stupid given most people just don't commute daily to entire different regions on a daily basis other than truckers.

There is zero reason why all the HSR systems have to connect to each other. Implementing metro area subway systems would make a million times more sense.

Use military power and jurisdiction to force both through. The military can often just choose to ignore environmental laws and zoning. Put it under the Army Corp of Engineers like the dams. Have all the engineering in house and maintain that capability. The Army Corp of Engineers literally flooded entire small towns along rivers and nobody could challenge it. They said relocate or die.

I think committing crime on public transit should be a felony and that they should be banned for life. We have to prioritize people with jobs and money to make this system actually work. It can't just be a rolling homeless shelter.
