I think we can harnest it, but differently. By making mirrors to focus beams, and systems that can handle heat transfer from it with venting and stabilizing to avoid explosions and convert it to power. Tangable and strong power. But I am absolutely looking forward to this Tower being destroyed to absolute bits. Everything we have we will use to self destruct and I am finally OK with it, I want it, I want that.
They are alright for small applications, houses, infrastructure and that kind of stuff.But they aren't the answer to massive energy demands. They're inconsistent, require extensive input/maintenance costs and require expensive storage solutions to scale well. We have a lot of government schemes to subsidise panels and batteries in the home. The funny thing is, it actually jacks up the power prices for everyone who can't afford to buy them. Because the people getting cheap bills with their fancy setups, no longer pay into the broader infrastructure; transmission and management etc.

The amount of toxic waste it produces in manufacturing is quite a bit. Even wind is a scam in the green department because now you're burying thousands of massive broken blades in some mass grave.
Legit for light to medium applications. Powering a shed or detached garage that you can't get power to easily. For anything larger it mostly fails for various reasons, cost, upkeep, etc al.

Numbers have been run though, and in the BEST conditions, even modern panels will take 15 to 25 years to pay off, while the panels only actually last 10 to 15 on average in practice. Especially if you live in an area prone to extreme weather that kicks up dust and debris, like tornados and hail storms and hurricaines. Up here the government ended all the solar programs for putting panels on residential roofs because the savins just weren't showing up for most people, the government was spending insane money for a loss that was supposed to take more strain off the grid but ended up creating more strain because solar isn't consistent, even on sunny days.Also the environmental impact of solar panels and wind turbines not being recyclable can't be ignored anymore

I would say that it's both overrated and underrated in some aspects. For example my dad connect a water pump to a solar panel and it did water our garden, the panel worked well past it's lifetime. But there was a problem of less power output during non sunny weather and a need to make it face the sun, and cleaning it every few months. So I would say that it isn't a scam, but you should be realistic about it, it won't replace fossil fuels and nuclear, but it can be used to by individual household to provide power, if combined with decent batteries it could be even used to power something almost all the time, I'm waiting to see how will the the solar panel technology improve in the next years.
